Hikami infamous for its plethora of suicides and spiritual entities. Playing as both Yuri and Ren, Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water sets the scene for horror lovers on the fictional Mount. Having released for Japan in 2014, western audiences can now feel the shivers of dread coupled with spine-tingling excitement from the game’s co-creator Makoto Shibata and series’ producer Keisuke Kikuchi. But sadly, the genuinely eerie atmosphere just falls flat with a bland storyline, repetitive mechanics and rigid gameplay.įrom Koei Tecmo and Nintendo’s SPD team comes the fifth instalment in the Project Zero series – or Fatal Frame as it’s known more widely in the US. Honestly, though, with the amount of healing items your characters have on hand, you’ll rarely be in any real danger in Maiden of Black Water.Aiming to revitalise classic horror with intuitive GamePad controls, Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water hits a perfect shot with the Camera Obscura. To be effective at combat, all you need to master is your timing with dodges (pressing X right before an attack) and keeping a reasonable distance from the ghosts between lining up good shots. The reality is if these characters could move at a brisk pace, it’d make dealing with the ghosts even more trivial than it already is. Funny enough, that’s pretty much the only semblance of challenge the game has going for it. However, the character movement is still painfully slow and incredibly clunky in tighter interior areas. It can still be unwieldy at times, but thankfully, you can also use analog controls if you prefer that. On the DualSense controller with gyro controls, it works well enough. Admittedly, it’s a brilliant shooting system that seemed perfect for the Wii U GamePad. ![]() Once again, you deal with ghoulish spirits by getting them in the frame, letting them get dangerously close, and dishing out big damage with fatal frames. ![]()
